A few weeks ago, Enrico came back from an event with a signed Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki factory race banner signed by all their winners (including Dustin Wimmer). We asked for your epic riding stories and photos, and we got some really great ones. We chose a winner, and you can read his story and check out the photos that go along with it. Congrats, Will!
Will’s Letter:
Well, It all started when we took a trip out to our favorite riding spot in Union Point, Georgia, in January 2009. We had planned the trip for weeks, and even though the weather was not great we went anyway.
It rained for 24 hours before our day of riding, and on the morning of our ride, two more heavy storms passed over…but that wasn’t stopping us. We took off down the familiar trails of DP. Some trails were already closed because of flooding or severe mud! As I came down a long hill into a bottom, I saw that water was running over the trail. With rain on my goggles, it looked as if I could skim across the water and continue on down the trail…WRONG! I suddenly felt like I was auditioning for an episode of Nitro Circus!
About half way across the moving water, my quad stalled and sank to the bottom. The water was moving so fast that it turned the ATV sideways and I rode it off a five-foot drop down into the creek and proceeded to follow the creek for about 50 yards in rapid water (similar to white water rapids). At some point, I got thrown off my quad and grabbed a limb hanging out over the creek. As I hung on to the limb, I watch my 2003 KFX 400 flip very quickly over and over and over down the creek. I knew I had destroyed my quad!
I hung out on the limb for a little bit catching my breath and was pulled from the creek by my buddies who were right behind me when all this went down. They, however, decided to stop and look at the creek before crossing it! It just so happened that a dam on a pond broke right before we headed down the trails, causing the creek to become a river! After I was pulled out of the creek, we walked another 50 yards down and found my ATV upside down caught under a tree!
I made it out with some bruises and scratches, but I can’t say the same for my quad. There were pieces of plastic laying on the edge of the creek, which goes to show you how fast the water was going (fast enough to throw pieces of ATV out onto the bank of the creek)!
After we called a buddy with a 4×4 ATV, we crawled back into the creek and started pulling my KFX out of the rushing water. We eventually got the ATV out of the creek and towed it back to camp after gathering up all the pieces. I drained the water from the air box and loaded it up. I was done for the weekend.
After the incident, DP officials shut down that trail. They had checked the trail earlier and it was fine, but the dam broke just before we arrived. The riding facility had NO fault whatsoever in this and were very nice to help me and my buddies get my ATV out of the creek!
The next day, I got the quad home and drained about three gallons of water out of the motor and cleaned the carb. Within two days, we had the motor flushed, cleaned, and running again. After a few miscellaneous parts, six oil changes/flushes, and some nights in the garage after work, my Kawi is running and looking great. I’m still riding it today and love my KFX 40o!
Hope this is gnarly enough for the banner! Enjoy the pics…they tell the whole story!

That's a pretty damn good story! I've rode a lot and I've never seen anybody's quad floating down stream! It sucks to be the leader of a ride sometimes.

I just went to my mailbox and saw my issue of Quad and was like hell yea! That was until I saw the insert that said that this was going to be my last issue of QUAD MAGAZINE. It felt like a punch to my stomach. This is my second ATV magazine that I subscribed to this year that has went under. But unlike the other magazine this one was by far the best magazine that I have ever read. The only thing Dirtwheels has on this magazine was its reader rides section. The pictures, adventure rides, posters, and the articles, were top notch and I don't think that they will be matched again by another atv magazine. This really sucks!!!
