QUAD: Regis, can you tell us a little about where you came from, and your life before UTV racing?
Regis: Well I grew up racing motocross starting when I was 5 years old. From 1997 through 1999 I went from the local amateur ranks to the pro ranks. In 2000 I became a factory rider for KTM, but I lost that ride in 2001. I started to do some work as a Hollywood stuntman for the Charlies Angels 2 movie and a 1-800 collect commercial. I used the money I made from those two gigs, to race Supercross as a privateer. In late 2001 I injured myself pretty good at the Salt Lake City race and while I was laying on the floor I decided that I could be happy not racing Supercross anymore. But I think about racing 24/7…it is in my blood, and I’ve been dying to get back on the track.
QUAD: We are starting to see you racing the iShock Rhino at a few select events. Can you tell us what motivated you to get into UTV racing?
Regis: To be honest it just sort of happened. My wife and I had just bought a Rhino to have some fun when we went camping. I knew that stock suspension isn’t all that great. So I called up an old friend, Brian over at iShock. I went out that weekend with the family and just had a blast. When I got back in town Monday, I called Brian to thank him and talk about how much fun I had. We got to talking about racing these things and within a few days we had decided to start getting ready and we were fully ready to race in a few weeks.
My other driving force is for my son Drew. He was born with a birth defect in his left tibia. He is missing bone and won’t ever be able to ride Supercross. He is so encompassed in what I do, and sees the photos of dad all over the house. I don’t want to have to tell him that he can’t do what dad does because of his leg. So my dream is that he will see the racing I do now, and get excited about it. Then maybe someday if he wants to, he can race UTV’s.
QUAD: We talked a bit about the past, but what is in store for you and your racing?
Regis: We started with small goals, like being ready to win the Del Mar race. Now that it has come and gone we are looking towards the remaining CORR series. I’m not going anywhere, and I think this type of racing can only grow. The rest of the future is kind of in the unknown.
QUAD: Tell us a bit about the class you are running in, and why?
Regis: I race in the Super Stock class. The idea behind the class is that your machine is basically stock. You can slap on a few upgrades and go race. I really want be a driving force for more people to race in this class. If Yamaha, Polaris, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda, or any of the manufactures are going to get involved they want the machine to look similar to what you buy at the dealer. Right now if someone wanted the same Rhino as mine they can go buy one at the dealer and call up my sponsors and get the parts. I hope I can be a driving force in the Super Stock class and help take UTV racing to the next level.
I also race in the Super Stock Doubles with my co-pilot AJ Bender. His dad Rich Bender and a close friend Mike Mattern have been at the races helping work on the Rhino.
QUAD: All this talk about racing, where can we come out and see you race?
Regis: I’ll be racing in the remaining CORR series, and in all of the M4SX series. Any races that pop up in between I’ll be at as well. I can’t get enough!
