Quick and easy steps to boost your quad’s performance
Power hungry? More than likely, you’re sitting on a stash of horsepower waiting to be unleashed. Here are the ten easiest ways to unleash those ponies that are hiding inside your quad.
1. Air Box - Removing a restrictive snorkel or removing the air box lid will allow your engine to breathe freely and run more efficiently.
2. Air Filter - Replacing the stock filter with a high-performance air filter can keep harmful dirt and dust out of your quad’s powerplant and allow it to take in more oxygen. Larger filters improve throttle response by providing a surplus of clean air when you hit the throttle.
3. Spark Plugs - Platinum spark plugs are more conductive than their stock brethren and allow more ignition energy to ignite the cylinder more efficiently.
4. Fuel Additives - Cleaning additives can restore proper fuel flow to your quad, while performance additives, like octane boosters, can help your machine get more from gas.
5. Camshafts - The camshafts control the valves, thereby controlling the flow into and out of the engine. Adjusting the camshaft timing can yield power improvements.
6. Ride Regularly - Your quad was designed to be ridden regularly. Routine use helps keep the bearings and seals properly conditioned, allowing them to operate more smoothly, and prevents corrosion from deteriorating performance.
7. Carburetor Jetting - Those little brass bits control the amount of fuel that is fed to your ATV’s engine. A wide range of sizes are available to perfectly control the amount of fuel flow to you engine.
8. Grease and Oil - Regularly check the major components of your machine. Too much oil or grease will attract grime and rob your quad of horsepower, and too little will send your four wheeler to the repair shop.
9. Chain Tension - Properly adjust your chain to prevent excess tension from binding the rear axle and engine sprocket.
10. High Performance Exhaust - Nndoubtedly one of the most popular modifications, uncorking the flow of exhaust gases from your machine will let it rip!
