We got an email from Team Kawasaki’s Jimmy White this morning with a link to this old ATV racing footage from Carlsbad, CA. The race originally aired on ABC in 1987 (which is amazing itself) and yes, that is Jimmy racing a Suzuki QuadRacer! If you’re a fan of old-school racing, it’s an absolute blast watching legends like Jimmy White, Donny Banks and Marty Hart all battling it out in the early days of our sport. And you owe it to yourself to flip through some of the other videos that user airfoolersdotcom has posted. He also has the 1st moto of this race and some of the commentary is absolutely priceless!

I love watching the older races like this. Thanks for putting this on here, and thanks to Jimmy White for sending it to you. I like when they were in the pit area and comparing the factory guy's setup to the privateer. It made me laugh when I saw it because of the motosodes on here that show the factory rigs of today. This sport has came a long way!!!!!!!!!!!

Go to youtube and check out the rest of the videos that airfoolersdotcom put up there. The video I posted today is the 2nd moto…you need to go check out the 1st moto. Some of the commentary is absolutely classic. I can't remember who said it, but basically the announcers were saying that quad racing is good for aging ex-dirt bike racers or some B.S. like that. It's seriously unreal how far off they were…

Quad racing is good for everyone!!! I know what you mean though, I am 29 and started riding a JR50 when I was 2. I have always liked both quads and bikes. I hate when I hear that atv's are easy to ride and take no skill. Well if they are talking about night rides with coolers full of beer on utility's then maybe they right. Although I will say it is impressive how some guys can ride all night and not spill a drop of their Bud Light. All it takes is a few laps around a track and some fast paced trail riding to show someone how hard it really is to ride a quad. I think the problem is that the pro's make it look so easy!! The tables I think are starting to turn with atv's these days. Quads now are starting to get some upgrades like EFI before the bikes do. Before long they will be adapting the quad motors to use in the dirt bikes.
PS One of my favorite quads I have owned is a 88 LT250R. Partially because of the good times I had on it. I also want to say thanks for making such a great magazine and web site to match it.

Does anyone know if you can get any old quad racing footage on dvd? I've got the old Blackwater 100 dvd, but are there any more? I'd like to have a dvd of some old mx atv racing. Kind of like the Supercross Classics dvd.

Wow…what a flashback! I love how Jimmy mentions racing 3 wheelers prior to the quads! so i searched youTube and there is also a Pro 3 Wheeler MX (in 5 parts) from 1986 in Washington State (White, Hart, and etc). Great race to watch, I can't believe how fast they actually were on those factory trikes! Additionally located more vintage footage with an indoor TT race at the Cow Palace in 1986, and they even mention Jimmy is actually from my Des Moines, Iowa.
