If you’re shopping for someone who loves the feeling of sand in his or her teeth, here’s a list of 10 items that will make their dune riding experience even better. Don’t carve bowls without checking this list first!
1. Paddle Tires
Not everyone runs paddle tires when they hit the dunes, but these specifically designed meats will have your quad carving sand like nothing else. The long ridges along these tires help a quad find traction in the soft sand and even help kick up some roost (which is part of the fun of dune riding!).

2. Whip Flag
You shouldn’t ride in the dunes without one! Whip flags mounted to the rear plastic of a quad help other riders see you before they can actually see you. With a ton of designs (from the standard bright orange to elaborate graphics), whip flags are a great way to express a little of your dune goon personality!

3. Air Filter Cleaner Kit
Your quad’s engine does not like sucking sand. Having an air filter cleaner kit is invaluable when you’re in the dunes. Keep the air filter clean and your machine will be happy. Also, while you’re at it, invest in a filterskin for your air filter to help it resist breathing in sand.

4. Goggles
If you’ve even been in the dunes on a windy day, you’ll know how important goggles are. Even on a calm day, riding behind someone who’s seriously carving some bowls is enough to make you cry. A good set of goggles with thick foam around them to keep out sand is a great investment. You might even be wearing them around the campfire at night, depending on the wind!

5. Helmet
Don’t ride in the dunes without a helmet. Sure, the sand looks soft and feels soft, but when you’re cruising up and over dunes, you never know what’s on the other side. A witch’s peak or another dune rider could mess up your flow, and you’ll be glad you’re wearing that helmet.

6. H.I.D. Lights
A night ride in the dunes is some of the greatest riding you’ll ever find. Light up the night with a nifty H.I.D. light mounted to your quad. They’re a little spendy, but the fun you’ll have is well worth the price. You can either buy a little light or a full-blown daytime set of lights to really brighten up the dunes.

7. Boots
When you’re dune riding, a pair of riding boots will keep your ankles and feet safe and sound. They’ll also keep some of the sand out, much better than sneakers or whatever else you’re wearing. Having your feet slip off the pegs is a common occurrence in the dunes, and a set of riding boots made specifically for ATVs will help keep your ankles and feet from getting damaged

8. CamelBak
It’s hot in the desert. Go figure. Instead of having to stop every mile to get some refreshment, get a CamelBak and carry some water or sports drink on your back. With an easily bendable tube that can be clipped to the front of your shirt, a cool drink is easy and requires no stopping or helmet removal.

9. Shocks
There are some serious G-outs to be found in the dunes…that’s half the fun, right? With a nice set of aftermarket shocks, your machine will soak up hard landings easily and make it a little softer on your body. Shocks are expensive, but after you have a set of quality aftermarket shocks that are easily tunable, you’ll wonder how you rode without them.

10. New Plastic
Everything in the dunes is bigger and bling-er. Get a new set of plastics for your quad to really show off your style. Try a new color, or if you’re a big spender, get a set of bodywork custom painted for use in the dunes.
