How to Ride Through Water
Navigating stream crossings on an ATV can be a challenge. Here are some tips on how to get you and your quad through water safely.
_ Get off your machine and approach the stream-eye it up to figure out the best approach. Check the speed of the water. If it’s swifter than a gently rolling creek bed, ride parallel to the stream until you find a suitable place to wade through.
_ Avoid rocks, stumps, or any other debris that may impede your ATV’s forward progress. Big boulders or deep gullies can get your quad hung up in the middle of the stream, and once you’re stuck midway through, it’s difficult to get out!
_ After finding a clear path, approach the stream at a decent clip. Stand up and lean back a bit to keep the machine’s front wheels light.
_ Maintain a constant speed as you cross the water, and keep an eye on the area directly ahead for unseen obstacles.
_ If the current is strong, you may need to steer into it slightly to stay on course.
_ Stay as light as possible on the machine when going over rocks or debris and be ready to reposition your weight quickly. For example, if the quad needs more rear traction, swiftly adjust your weight to the back.
_ If the ATV’s momentum drops, apply a touch more throttle. Don’t get an over-zealous thumb, though, or you’ll risk digging in your machine deep. Apply more throttle gradually while rocking the machine back and forth to maximize traction.
_ If you’ve done all of the above correctly, exit the stream, lift your hands in victory, and holler “woo-hoo!”
