Yamaha Unveils Ultimate Tight Trail Sport ATV: YFZ450X
Sport ATV Leader Aims to Widen Gap from Competition with All-New Trail-Designed YFZ450X

CYPRESS, Calif. – September 8, 2010 – Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., today announced the new YFZ450X – the ultimate high performance tight trail sport ATV. Designed with the same power-packed engine, performance and technology of the YFZ450R, the new YFZ450X is designed to navigate tight trails with a 46-inch width, optimized suspension and other features specific to tight trail riding and racing.

Anyone familiar with ATV racing knows the YFZ’s winning heritage. As the first race-ready 450-class ATV, the original YFZ quickly became a favorite of racers and fans at tracks across the country. The YFZ450R, released last fall, became the best new all around high performance sport ATV with a motocross track-width that excelled in many situations, from tracks to trails to sand dunes. Now the YFZ450X is the latest evolution of Yamaha racing technology optimized for tight trail riding like GNCC racing and wooded environments.

SIZE MATTERS
The most noticeable difference between the YFZ450R and all-new YFZ450X is the overall size. It makes sense that a machine built to dominate tight trails would look to save some space as it carves through narrow courses. The width of the YFZ450X is 46.1 inches - optimized for woods riding and the same width as the original YFZ450. This is accomplished through a new front end design and a 50 mm shorter rear axle. Accompanying those updates is a change in steering geometry specific to woods riding translating into less fatigue for the rider.

OPTIMIZED SUSPENSION
The YFZ450X comes with a newly designed front suspension. The front A-arm is shortened 43.9 mm to 395.2 mm - optimal dimensions for tight courses and the new suspension while still ensuring a full range of motion. The front KYB shocks are now 426 mm long versus the 462 mm length of the YFZ450R. The easy to adjust damping goes unchanged. As a full package, the new suspension settings, A-arm design and trail track width allow the YFZ450X to soak up bumps while also allowing the rider great handling through tight, technical terrain.
The gravity-cast aluminum rear swing arm is matched to a fully adjustable 46 mm KYB piggyback shock affording the rear wheels 11 inches of travel.

POWER AND PERFORMANCE
The YFZ450X features the powerful titanium 5-valve DOHC liquid cooled single cylinder 449cc engine using the cylinder head and cylinder from the championship-winning YZ450F motorcycle. The titanium five-valve cylinder head comes with camshafts designed just for ATVs that hammers out superior low- to mid-range torque and pushes through to a high-revving, hole-shot grabbing top end.
Like its track-dominating brother, the technologically advanced 450X is also equipped with electronic fuel injection featuring a 42 mm Mikuni® throttle body, 12-hole Denso injector system and a Mitsubishi 32 bit ECU, which provides exceptional atomization of the fuel for maximum power, unrivaled throttle response and automatic altitude and temperature adjustment. For 2010, the YFZ receives a new FI setting specifically designed for those situations unique to technical woods riding. The system also includes idle speed control for easy, reliable startup. A stainless steel head pipe with a titanium heat shield and a new oval muffler provide maximum performance while keeping the YFZ450X well below recommended noise limits.

CAST ALUMINUM FRAME
The new YFZ450X features the lightweight, no-weld cast aluminum frame exclusively from Yamaha and first introduced on the 450R. The frame’s high tension-steel bottom portion helps keep the engine as low as possible, centralizing mass for optimized handling. The cast aluminum frame is bolted together, rather than welded, for maximum durability.

SIMPLE SERVICE ACCESS AND RIDER COMFORT
Like the 450R, the all-new YFZ450X has the benefit of years of Yamaha Factory Racing experience – on resulting highlight is simple race prep and service. Body panels come off easily, and there is no need to remove the battery or other components to take off the fenders. The oil tank is integrated with the crankcase so servicing the engine is a snap.
The YFZ450X also boasts ProTaper® handlebars with four-position adjustability, allowing riders of any size to find a comfortable setting. The seat design is thin yet roomy in the front and wider and more padded in the back for a more comfortable all-around ride. The YFZ450X also comes with large 65 mm wide foot pegs with kick-ups that provide maximum traction and added comfort when moving around on the machine.

WHEELS, TIRES AND STOPPING POWER
It should come as no surprise that YFZ450X has shaved a few pounds off as well. In addition to the weight saved with the reductions in the rear axle and front A-arm and suspension design, the front and rear wheels have been updated to reduce weight while also increasing structural rigidity. With the seam of the wheel now rolled inwards, not only is the wheel more rigid, it is also prevents debris that could otherwise build up after a day of riding. In all, five pounds have been scrubbed off the overall weight of this model bringing the YFZ450X in at 400 pounds.
Those new wheels host Dunlop radial tires with a superb combination of compound, tire profile, tread pattern and sidewall-to-tread center stiffness to provide outstanding comfort, bump absorption and precise cornering performance. At 20 inches in the rear and 21 inches in the front, the tires also provide maximum ground clearance for any debris that may be found along the trail.
The YFZ450X has excellent stopping power from dual front hydraulic disc brakes and a lightweight wave-type rear rotor including dual piston calipers in the back as well as the front.
Rounding out the ATV’s top features is an instrument panel located on the fender in front of the rider including vital indicators signaling low fuel, coolant temperature, check engine, and neutral gear in a straightforward LED display.
The new YFZ450X comes in a standard color Team Yamaha Blue/White or in a second color Red/White. A Bill Ballance Special Edition model comes with a special color pattern, graphics, wheel color, shock color, SE badging, a GYTR front bumper and Bill Ballance-inspired #1 plate.

This sucks Honda better step up and come out with a answer to these yamaha's..

  • josh p Says:

Where in the hell is reverse. I am so pissed!!! I saw this and I thought it was exactly what I have been wanting. I want to buy a new quad, but I want reverse. I don't want the Kawasaki. KTM isn't selling quads for 2010. I don't like Polaris. I like the LTR450, Yamaha yfz450 and Honda 450r. I just want reverse. As soon as I saw this I said, "oh hell yea, I'm buying this thing". I ride in the woods, and I like to hillclimb. As I read through and didn't see a reverse mentioned I felt the bubble burst. I will just wait and see what Honda comes out with. Surely they will include reverse. I will have to make payments on my new quad for 4 years. I don't want to buy this thing and in 1-2 years Suzuki or Honda make a trail friendly 450 with reverse. I'll be riding the old Z for now.

  • josh p Says:

The more I look at this I want it. I really wish it had reverse but I might consider this anyway. I am surprised that in this down economy Yamaha released this and an all new Yz450f dirtbike. Yamaha has a killer line up of quads and bikes. The Raptor in my opinion is hands down the best big bore sport quad. They have the Raptor 250 which is an awesome quad. They have a sweet race ready YFZ450R and now this 450X. The Grizzly is one hell of a sport utility!!! They also gave us the Banshee! Oh yea, and they have the Rhino! I used to be a big Honda fan, but that has started to change.
Honda is starting to seem a little boring to me. Honda is giving the customer what they want to give them instead of giving the customer what they want. Who really wanted the 700xx. My friend is a salesman at the local Honda dealer and he tries to push one of those things off on me every time I walk in the door. He can sell me one for $5600. They can't get rid of them and the economy is not to blame. The 400ex or X is long in the tooth and there are 07 leftovers everywhere for $4000-$4200. Their 450 is like vanilla ice cream. It's a good quad, but not great. The Big Red is a good work horse, but it's ugly and boring! Honda better come out with a new 450 race quad and a 450 trail quad with reverse and soon! They also need to throw a little more money into quad racing.

  • yamahaa Says:

W do you need reverse for? I have trail ridden for years and have yet to use reverse. If you want reverse put youre big but on a utility machine.

  • josh p Says:

    TO: THE TRAIL QUAD GOD

TO BACK UP IT TIGHT SECTIONS.

I used to say the same thing when I had a quad without reverse. After having one with it you really hate to give it up. Reverse on a woods machine makes sense. I,m sure the only reason the 450X doesn't have it is because of the cost. I live on a dairy farm and ride just about every day. Every now and then you find yourself in a spot where you have to get off and push it. I'd rather not. I do ride Utility's and I like them too. You keep on being awesome!!!!

  • Brent Says:

Although I agree that Yamaha should have put reverse on the YFZ450X, KTM does have 2010 models! The KTM ATVs are well worth the cost. After this new YFZ450X without reverse, I'm done with Yamaha, my Raptor 660 will be the last Yamaha I buy. They have two models that are essentially the same except for suspension settings and overall width.

  • josh p Says:

I had read online that KTM were not selling atv's for 2010. Thanks for letting me know. I am sure their quads are worth the cash, but the cost would be a bit of a stretch for me. I had a 2007 KTM250XC dirt bike and I loved it. It made me a believer in KTM. If Yamaha would have put a reverse on this 450X I would want it. If Honda had put their 700xx motor in a straight axle quad and made it look good I would have bought it. Thanks for agreeing with me on the reverse and not being a douche bag like the guy below.

  • YFZ450 #563 Says:

I agree with honda putting more money into quad racing, i race harescrambles and I never see anythings honda, no factory GNCC tents or trailors or anything, its all been yamaha untill borich came around a started kickin everyones butts! Suzuki is a nasty quad, but they designed the lt450r for mx maybe we'll see a X version of that soon as well, for the stock 49" width of those suzukis makes it tight in the trails! but GO YAMAHA

  • josh p Says:

That's what I'm saying. Where are they? Honda has gotten lazy. They just take and don't give enough back to the sport. They seem to only care about Supercross, Motocross, and Baja type racing. I would love to see a woods version of the LTR450. My friend has one and I love the thing. The motor is strong and smooth. Like you said, it's just a little wide in the tight and nasty but it does better than I thought it would. Right now I ride a Z400. It's a good trail quad, but I want more of a woods racer with reverse.

  • Jennifer Says:

the Kawasaki KFX450R is the way to go josh! I have one .. and it is the only one with reverse.. its race ready and all aluminum.. fast, quick , light, Braaap!

  • josh p Says:

I have heard they need some love from the aftermarket to compare power wise, and handling, to the some of the other 450's. In your opinion, is this true? Have you rode the others? I have not ridden a Kawi 450, but i sat on one. Right away I noticed the seat was very firm. Too firm for me. Did you have any problems with the seat? What all have you done to yours? I need to ride one!!! I might like it. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate it? What would you change. Has anything wore out or broken prematurely? I like what Josh Creamer and Chad have been doing on the track with them. I like how Kawasaki is so serious about racing. In the dirt bike world Kawasaki rocks too! I just haven't owned any Kawi quads. I'm not sure their 450 is for me, but it could be.

  • Brent Says:

I just read that KTM may stop production for one year, and resume production the following year in order to sell off their remaining stock. But they are not axing the ATV line.

I just bought a brand new 2008 KTM450 XC ATV in Oregon for less than $6200 OUT THE DOOR! I drove seven hours to get it. My Raptor 660 has a full exhaust and K&N intake, and the KTM 450 actually edges out the Raptor in terms of performance. Hands down the fastest stock 450 you can buy (except maybe the Polaris with the KTM engine). You can find the '08 KTMs for a pretty good price in a lot of places. This YFZ450x would have kept me a Yamaha fan if it had reverse.

  • Brent Says:

Reverse is a luxury and hardly adds any eight to the quad. I've owned a TRX450 in the past and I never used reverse either, cause it didn't have a reverse gear! You don't really NEED reverse just like a lot of people don't NEED a four wheel drive truck, but it's nice to have. It's a lot nicer backing out of a tight trail or hole without having to get off the quad.

  • josh p Says:

That's one hell of a deal! A guy I know who works for KTM says the company, like others, is in a tight spot money wise. They are making several cuts for 2010. It was just a bad time for KTM to get in the market with such an expensive quad. I hope I can find someone out on the trail that I can convince to let me take a short spin on one. Let's see, Z400, 400X, or KTM 450XC for the same money? That's one hard decision. Glad you got a deal.

  • RBS Says:

Wow,no reverse that sucks for sure!Ktm,kawasaki and polaris have 450s with reverse. For some people they just can't miss what they never had.Would not own another quad without one.Honda will not have any kind of race team for 2010 so do not look for anything big from them.
Just go ahead and lose a big race/money once are twice because your stuck in a jam of quads but reverse would get you out if you had one. You will figure it out real quick.
WOW KTMs for that price at $6000 would be a good deal for sure, now that's BIG news!!
If I was to get a new 450 I would look real hard at the Kawi because my local dealer races them and some of the best service I ever seen.

  • brad B Says:

LONG LIVE YAMAHA!! Sure Reverse is nice, but The YFZ is light and easy to lift.
Anyone who races the Kawasaki takes the reverse off anyway

  • Brent Says:

If you ever take a spin on one, it'll be hard to get back off!

  • josh p Says:

You're right. The YFZ is light and isn't too hard to pick up and turn around at first. But after a long day of riding I really don't want to get off and push. The 450X is a great looking quad, but without reverse I'll have to wait and see what else comes out. Brent up above got a KTM for less than $6200 out the door. Now that seems to be the way to go. That quad has about everything I want. I found one new on eBay for around $6000, but it's too far away. I am going to keep looking.

  • Ed A Says:

I have an YFZ450R. Love it. Had a 2006 Suzuki LT450R and it was ok. The ride on the Yamaha is head and shoulders better than the Suz, and it is much faster (Yamaha is mostly, stock, Suzuki had pipe, cherry bomb and no air box lid). I us it for desert racing in AZ, CA and NV, mostly between 80 and 150 mile long races. The Yamaha has been very dependable, but the stock tires were too soft. I would love reverse on this and a 6th gear. The extra weight would be worth the trade-off. I have no interest in the 450X, as desert racing is mostly high speed, and all trails are at least 50" wide. I think the 4×4 comment is dead on. While you don't need it very often, when you do, you are glad you have it. While there are very few times I would need reverse (where as I could use a 6th gear every race), the couple times I have blown out out a turn, being tired and in full gear, reverse would have been worth its weight in gold.

  • Dallas P Says:

i had my z400 for about 3 years now, and ive been waiting for a 450 to come out with reverse and no luck! it doesnt add that much weight, alright maybe a little, but take it off somewhere else, less plastic? who knows, but they sure would sell alot more if they had reverse. i mean there alot of yfz models, if they just make one model with reverse, then wed have the choice. no lie, if it had reverse, id go out this weekend and get one! i mean ktm is a bit pricy for me, and kawasaki, all my friends have it, and im just not a fan. whoever comes out with reverse first has my buy!

and if anyone has any info on upcoming new quad lines for suzuki, yamaha, or honda that has 450s with reverse, let me know!

  • Brabus Says:

I asked i guy from youtube "markFreeman" how is the Ktm 450 quad, cuz i love Ktm's!
And he said (now i quote) "Ktms are super fast but they wear out like bearings and sprockets and that shit… and there pretty pricey"!
    That's what he said

Now what does that mean, does the quad wer out so fast like bearings and sprockets,
or do the little parts wear out a little faster than usual? (i mean, the bearings and the sprockets???)
guys please answer if you really have expirience Ktm quads,

Brent, are you happy with the bike? what would you change if you wanted to!
Any reliability or build quality problems?

We just got back from the dunes. The KTM ran great! Handled awesome, tons of power even though it is bone stock. The low beam stopped working, so I'll have to get a new bulb I guess. Pretty minor and inexpensive fix. Other than that, we had zero problems. I'll be getting a KTM 525 to replace the ol' Raptor 660 in the future. Not trying to brag, but it is hands down the nicest quad I've ever ridden. I honestly wouldn't change a thing. I might widen it out in the future, but after riding it at the Oregon dunes, I found that even in stock trim it handles extremely well! As for parts, I haven't had to replace any myself, but I know many KTM owners in this area and I've never heard parts being more expensive. I also just checked Rocky Mountain ATV and found that the bearings and sprockets are the same as any other Japanese bike. If you get a chance to buy one, you'll love it!
