I'm currently shopping for a new sport bike to be used predominately at the dunes and am comparing the Raptor 700 and KTM 525. In the June/July 2008 issue, article ”Battle of the Big Dogs,” Quad Magazine made the comment when talking about power, “Even though the Yamaha mill has an extra 176ccs, the Orange Machine was by far the most powerful (pg. 64).” Then they made the comment, “While it (raptor) wasn't beating the KTM engine up the hill in stock form, we are very aware that this mill is a completely different animal when you add a pipe and a fuel commander (pg 64).”

My question is this:  If Quad Magazine performed the same tests on a Raptor 700 with a pipe and fuel commander, will the Raptor 700 EVER outpower the KTM 525?  Or, will the KTM 525 remain the stronger machine?

I've ridden on a 525 on the track, woods, open fields, etc. I've also ridden a Raptor 700 in a lot of open area and track.

The 525 is more powerful in stock form but it's mostly punched out. The 700 can get a LOT more power. I've ridden a few modded 700's that'd spank that 525. If you're looking for power then go for the 700. If you want a better all around quad then the KTM. But for the price and what you're doing, I'd go with the Raptor and do a few mods and be happy.
